What Is Honda Proximity Key Entry?

At Nissan, it's called an Intelligent Key.

Mazda calls it Advanced Keyless Entry.

Honda refers to it as Honda Proximity Key Entry.

Kia named it Smart Key.

What is it?

Although the systems differ slightly by vehicle, the main themes of every form of proximity access are pushbutton start and the ability to leave your key in your jeans pocket, winter jacket, or Kate Spade bag. That means no more searching from pocket to pocket or digging through the bottom of a gym bag - your vehicle will recognize the close proximity of the key and permit entry.

Depending on the vehicle and the settings, entry can be afforded by the press of a door handle-mounted button, or by the presence of your hand grasping the actual handle. Some vehicles can be set up so that passenger doors only unlock with a double-click. Meanwhile, when exiting, some vehicles can be set up to enable a walkaway feature where the vehicle recognizes that there are no occupants and no key in proximity, thereby locking itself. Others require the press of a button on the door handle.

While keyless entry was a major enhancement over the standard key, it did still require that keys be pulled out of a pocket or bag. Even the advent of pushbutton start didn't fully mollify the convenience-addicted, because keys were still required.

Pairing pushbutton start with proximity access, however, is a much more significant leap forward. Ask your sales consultant for a full demonstration and explanation.
