Watch Honda Explain How to Drive a Manual Transmission

The overwhelming majority of new vehicles are sold with automatic transmissions. That's two pedals: a brake on the left; the throttle on the right.

Honda nevertheless remains committed to the three-pedal manual transmission, with availability on the Fit, Civic, Accord, and HR-V. For many consumers, it's a choice made with budgets in mind, as manual transmissions typically cost less. For the automotive enthusiast, many of which are traditional Honda customers, a manual transmission is something else altogether.

"There's something special, something intimate and pure about being in complete control of your car," says Sage Marie, Honda's assistant vice president for communications.

Yet many new drivers - and even many experienced drivers - came of age in an era in which the prevalence of automatic transmissions made learning to drive a manual very difficult. After all, many new drivers don't know anybody with a manual-shift vehicle.

In this How To Operate A Manual Transmission 101 video, Honda's Zach Vlasuk explains the manual transmission in a simple, straightforward, and fun format that might make you give one of Honda's 6-speeds a second thought.
