2020 Mazda CX-9 Is More Luxurious, Safer, And More Powerful

Mazda Canada's updates on the 2020 Mazda CX-9 combine to make Mazda's flagship utility vehicle a more technologically advanced, more premium, and more powerful vehicle.

The CX-9's been an award-winner from the start, but that didn't stop Mazda from introducing meaningful upgrades in each successive model year. The list of improvements included everything from easier third row access to a 360-degree camera.

For 2020, Mazda is upgrading the CX-9 yet again. Start under the hood, where the already immensely torquey 2.5-liter turbocharged engine gets more torque. There's an extra 10 lb-ft of twist, taking the total to 320 lb-ft. Now there's even more overtaking power in the CX-9 is right where you want it: down low in the rev range.

Inside, second-row captain's chairs are now optional in both the CX-9 GS-L and the CX-9 GT for a nominal $300 charge. On the top-of-the-line Signature, the new Captain's Chairs Package is standard equipment.

The independent second-row seats are heated, and second-row occupants also have their own USB charging ports and cupholders integrated alongside the seat heater controls on the back of the front centre console.

Every CX-9 is remarkably well equipped, and all CX-9s now include Mazda's i-ActiveSense safety features: radar cruise control, smart city brake support with pedestrian detection, smart brake support with collision warning, lane departure warning, lane-keep assist, blind spot monitoring, and rear cross traffic alert.

Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility are also now standard across the board along with tri-zone automatic climate control, rain-sensing wipers, a power driver's seat, and heated front seats.

The CX-9 GS-L bumps up the aesthetics and handling with 20-inch alloys. There's also leather upholstery, a heated steering wheel, a sunroof, a power liftgate, and a power front passenger seat. The CX-9 GS-L also introduces Mazda's new 9-inch centre infotainment screen.

The CX-9 GT adds a hands-free power tailgate, a 360° view monitor, ventilated front seats, adaptive front lighting, front and rear parking sensors, and Mazda's Active Driving Display with traffic sign recognition.

The Signature is the top-spec CX-9. There's Santos Rosewood trim and the option of choosing either Deep Chestnut or Pure White Nappa leather. There's a new CX-9 Signature wheel design.
