2019 Nissan Altima Smyrna Assembly Plant

Production of the all-new 2019 Nissan Altima began yesterday, August 23, in Smyrna, Tennessee. It's a welcome development for fans of the Altima who have been waiting for the new car, with its available all-wheel-drive system and turbocharged engine.

To prepare for production of the advanced new Altima, Nissan announced a $170 investment in the company's Tennessee and Mississippi plants. To build the new Altima, Nissan's factories first needed to be able to conduct laser brazing. Added to this was a new paint shop that could utilize polyurethane stone guard coat paint for a more durable appearance. Finally, the plants needed to be configured for ProPILOT Assist calibration.

Nissan's Smyrna plant was the highest-producing automotive assembly plant in North America in 2017, building vehicles as distinct as the Nissan LEAF, Maxima, Rogue, Pathfinder, Infiniti QX60, and the Altima. More than 628,000 vehicles exited the Tennessee factory last year. Practice appears to make perfect: the 2018 Altima ranks highest in its segment in J.D. Power's Initial Quality Study.
