WHO KNEW FUEL ECONOMY WOULD BE SUCH A KEY SELLING POINT IN THE NEW ALL-WHEEL-DRIVE 2019 NISSAN ALTIMA?

The Altima's 7.9 L/100KM Combined Rating Is Only Part Of The Story

2019 Nissan Altima SV AWD Cape Road PEI

This 2019 Nissan Altima SV has been a fixture on the roads of central Prince Edward Island for the last few weeks. It's either posing for photos on quintessential red dirt roads, ferrying tourists to the lighthouse at Cape Tryon, completing the morning/evening commute, or starring in an upcoming video.

It's been everywhere, from the north shore to the south shore, from Charlottetown to Summerside and seemingly everywhere in between. What makes it so good at its job?

Well, for starters, the new Altima uses very little fuel.

Officially, Natural Resources Canada's Office of Energy Efficiency rates the Altima at 7.9 L/100km - that's 9.1 L/100km in the city; 6.5 L/100km on the highway. (For the record, that's a 31-mpg city rating and a 43-mpg highway rating for a 36-mpg combined rating on the Imperial gallon scale.)

But the results in this Altima demo have actually been much, much better than that. On the latest tank of fuel, we recorded a 6.3 L/100km result thanks to plenty of traffic-free, rural-road driving and improved weather mixed in with some urban runabouts, too.

That figure would be impressive in a compact car, but the Altima's a hugely spacious midsize car with 2,854 litres of passenger volume and a 436-litre trunk. Moreover, the Altima's an all-wheel-drive midsize sedan (every new Altima is equipped with Intelligent All-Wheel Drive) that, you might assume, would inevitably require more fuel.

As always, your mileage may vary. Fuel economy results are as much the byproduct of driver and location as they are the engine itself. Yet the odds are in the Altima's favour thanks to an excellent transmission and a new 2.5-liter engine (that's been turned around backwards) that treat fuel like a precious resource to be used as sparingly as possible.

After all, this is your money we're talking about. Don't you want to keep as much of it as possible?
