2018 Nissan Kicks white

Okay, to be honest, it would be a waste of a handsome and efficient crossover to park the 2018 Nissan Kicks SR in your garage only to use it as an in-home audio system.

But you might be tempted.

The Nissan Kicks SR, which sits above the S and SV in the new Kicks' lineup, is equipped with a class-exclusive Bose Personal Plus sound system. At first, you may just count six speakers, but there are another two all-important UltraNearField speakers hidden in the driver's headrest.

Besides, it's not the number of speakers that matters but rather the quality of those speakers and the tuning of the audio system. Bose has chosen to highlight the Kicks for its own benefit. "This sound system has been designed and engineered specifically for the unique cabin acoustics of this vehicle," Bose says. "We apply our expertise in cabin analysis, listening evaluation, and custom-tuned equalization to deliver an accurate and lifelike listening experience you'll enjoy with every ride."

South of the border, the Kicks' Bose audio system is a costly upgrade - worth every penny, but nevertheless costly. $1,000 gets American customers Bose Personal Plus, Prima-Tex heated front seats, and security system as an optional upgrade package on the SR.

Canadians are offered superior value. The Kicks SR includes the Bose Personal Plus sound system as standard equipment. (The SR also includes an Intelligent Around View Monitor, blind spot monitoring with rear cross traffic alert, remote start, and the special Prima-Tex upholstery.)

Critics are raving about the Kicks' new Bose audio.

  • AutoGuide: "Crank the volume to even unsafe levels and there's no distortion or rattling, just a fusillade of crystal-clear tunes."
  • Autoblog: "The effect of these strategically placed speakers is an unrivaled soundstage. It does so much with so little. The bass hits you in the chest, while the treble and mid sections give a clarity that'll send chills down your spine."
  • CNET: "This system punches well above its weight. For a stereo at anywhere near this price point, it's nothing short of exceptional. "
  • Motor Trend:  "The Bose stereo in this Kicks, no joke, sounds better than the base stereo in a $180,000 Bentley Bentayga. Play an uncompressed audio file off your phone, and marvel at the clarity of the individual instruments and the breadth of the soundstage,"

The Kicks is due to arrive at Centennial Nissan in Summerside and Charlottetown this summer. You'll want a test drive, but only after you've conducted a test listen.
