2018 NISSAN 370Z - PEI REVIEW

2018 Nissan 370Z

Perhaps now more than ever, there is no better way to describe the Nissan 370Z than with these two words: performance bargain.

$29,998. 332 horsepower. Rear-wheel drive. You've heard the hype. You're acquainted with the complex legal issues, the regulatory environment, the local challenges. Yes, some day, you may be asked to remove your hands from the wheel and your feet from the pedals.

DIY shifting? A wide variety of high-end sports car builders have already given up on that idea. Autonomy here we come.Ah, but we're not there yet. The 2018 Nissan 370Z requires a driver. A keen driver. A driver who wants to be fully and entirely engaged with every aspect of the process. The Z's steering has heft, but not too much, just enough for you to know that your input will be validated. The six-speed manual transmission's shifter slots into each gear with authority, as though announcing to the world - or at least the Z's two occupants - that we are now in second gear. Onward.

2018 Nissan 370Z Malpeque Bay - Centennial Auto Group

Of course, at the heart of the beast is a 3.7-liter V6 which makes all of its 332 horsepower and all of its 270 lb-ft of torque without the use of turbos. This is a naturally aspirated monster of a motor that longs to shove you out of a roundabout, as if the circle in Travellers Rest is merely a motivation station. It should come as no small surprise that the 2018 Nissan 370Z is a cut-price performance car - 2018 is the third year of sub-$30K Z pricing at PEI's Nissan stores. No, the surprising element is the fact that the price cut involves no performance cut. This is, in every sense of the term, full-bore Z, with the same powerplant and underpinnings as the prior Z (which cost some $10,000 more).

Nissan builds the 2018 370Z at its assembly plant in Tochigi, Japan. Is it the symbiotic relationship between Japan's biggest island of Honshu, where the Z is manufactured, and Prince Edward Island that explains why the 370Z so evidently belongs here, downshifting into Stanley Bridge and accelerating up to Strathgartney? Is that why the 2018 370Z just looks right, with its distinctive silhoutte, parked alongside Gulf of St. Lawrence?

2018 Nissan 370Z Summerside - Centennial Auto Group

Nah, the 2018 370Z would be fun to drive... anywhere. It would look great... anywhere. But on this island, at this point in history, at this price, and with this level of performance, the Z just feels like anywhere ought to be right here.

Centennial Nissan of Summerside is currently featuring two 2018 370Zs, both priced from $29,998 before fees and taxes. Gun Metallic and Deep Blue Pearl. In stock at Centennial Nissan of Charlottetown is a Passion Red 2018 370Z.
